Keenon W3 troubleshooting: charging pile failures, navigation loss, and the vision module

One manual, one version caveat

Everything below comes from Keenon’s official Smart Delivery Robot W3 User Manual (© 2019 Keenon Robotics). That manual documents the two-compartment W3; the ButlerBot W3 Keenon markets today is the four-compartment, 90 L hotel version. The procedures — charging, relocalization, fault handling — are the documented baseline, but if your unit shipped with newer paperwork, trust that first. Keenon publishes no numeric error codes for the W3 at all: faults are described by symptom, and the escalation path is always “contact the seller staff.”

The charging pile is also the positioning fix

This is the single most useful thing in the manual. When navigation fails mid-route, Keenon’s official troubleshooting table gives four causes in order:

  1. Positioning error. The fix is not a reboot: “Move the robot to the charging pile for charging and the positioning will be restored automatically.” The pile is the W3’s known reference point — docking is how it relocalizes.
  2. The vision module for positioning is blocked. Remove anything covering it — the dual stereo vision module sits on the front of the body, and a luggage tag, promo sticker, or towel draped on the robot is enough.
  3. LiDAR fault. Check whether the LiDAR (the gap layer in the body) is stained, and clean it with the robot powered off.
  4. Collision switch fault. Check whether the anti-collision strip is stuck pressed — a wedged strip reads as a permanent obstacle.

There’s no marker or QR-tag system to reposition against, unlike Pudu or Bear machines: the W3 localizes by laser, IMU, wheel encoders, and the vision module, so the pile is your only documented recovery anchor.

Robot won’t charge: the official four steps

From the same fault table, in Keenon’s order:

  1. The pile moved. “Place the charging pile back to its original location.” Installation is done by the seller’s technician, and the manual is explicit: don’t relocate the pile yourself — the robot navigates to where the pile was.
  2. The pile has no power. Housekeeping unplugging it to vacuum is a classic.
  3. The pile is blocked. Clear anything in front of it.
  4. Still failing? Contact the seller.

Manual charging, when auto-docking won’t: Settings → Power ManagementManual Charging, then push the robot back-first onto the pile so the charging port on the bottom of the robot meets the pile’s contacts. The pile indicator turning red means the connection succeeded — red is good here, not an alarm. (A “Charge Now” option instead sends the robot to find the pile itself.)

There’s also a wall-adapter fallback through the manual charging port on the back — power the robot off first, and the robot must not operate while adapter-charging. Adapter indicator: red = charging, green = done. Use only Keenon’s supply unit (BC254480030); third-party piles, adapters, and batteries are prohibited. And never wipe the charging contacts with a wet cloth or wet hands.

Vision module and sensor care

The manual’s guidance is thin but clear: clean the robot and pile only when powered off or unplugged, keep hard objects and liquids away from the sensors, and treat a stained LiDAR or a covered vision module as the first suspects in any navigation complaint. Keenon doesn’t publish a cleaning interval or method beyond that — a weekly wipe with a dry lens-safe cloth is the industry-standard habit, but it’s ours, not Keenon’s.

The limits that cause “navigation failed” in the first place

The W3’s documented operating envelope is narrow, and most chronic navigation loss is a route that violates it:

  • Slope under 5°, steps no higher than 15 mm. Indoor, flat, smooth floors only.
  • 0–45 °C operating temperature.
  • No liquids or sticky substances on the floor, cables tidied away, sharp debris (glass, nails, renovation waste) removed.
  • Don’t push or move the robot while it’s operating — that’s how it loses its position. If you must move it, power it off first and lift by the force-bearing areas on both sides, keeping it upright.

One E-stop warning worth drilling into staff: the E-stop switch on the back stops the drive, but pressed on a slope, the robot keeps rolling on inertia. Stop it on the flat.

When it’s a service call

Robot won’t power on after charging by adapter, can’t move properly, or has fallen over: the manual’s instruction is power off immediately and contact the seller — there is no user-serviceable path. Warranty baseline per the manual: 12 months on main parts, 6 months on consumables.
