What Error 18 actually means
iRobot’s definition: “Error eighteen (18) means your robot cannot return to its dock or starting position.” The cleaning job finished — the trip home is what failed.
Check you’re in the right guide first. iRobot states Error 18 does not occur on the 100/1000, 200/2000, Plus 400, Plus 500, or Max 700. Those are LiDAR robots, and a docking failure on them reports Error 1010 instead. Roomba Essential models have their own version of the article.
The prerequisite nobody mentions
This one explains more failures than any amount of cleaning. Per iRobot: for a Roomba to navigate to the Home Base, it must either start its job from the Home Base, or find one at some point during the job.
So if you carried the robot to a back bedroom and pressed Clean, it has no dock in its map — and “Dock” sends it back to where it started, not to the base. Same if you picked it up mid-run. The recovery is specific: place it facing the dock, within 6 ft (1.8 m), then send it home. iRobot also notes that if the job began off the dock, you should keep obstacles clear of that starting position too.
The placement numbers
These are iRobot’s published clearances, and they’re stricter than most people’s living rooms:

The dock also needs to be flat and flush against the wall — angle it and, in iRobot’s words, the robot “will clean diagonally in motion with the wall.” Keep it plugged in permanently, away from stairs, and don’t move it between floors: the robot uses the dock as its map’s reference point. Buy a second dock instead.
Two more placement traps. Direct sunlight on the dock “could blind the robot’s visual docking process.” And a Keep Out Zone placed too close will block docking — the robot holds a buffer of about half a robot length around one, so if docking got flaky right after you drew a zone, move the zone.
Give the 100/1000, 200/2000 and Mini an extra foot in front; iRobot recommends it explicitly.
Cleaning the right parts, the right way
Charging contacts. Unplug the dock and wait 60 seconds first. iRobot allows exactly two materials: a lightly dampened melamine sponge (Magic Eraser) or a lightly dampened cloth — “these are the only two acceptable materials,” nothing abrasive. Clean contacts “should have a visible shine.” The verdict test: if the contacts are green or copper colored, they’re damaged, and that robot or dock needs replacing. On AutoFill and AutoWash docks you have to press the button where the wheels sit to expose the contacts at all.
The docking target. This is where people cause damage. The IR window and Visual Docking Target get a clean, dry cloth only — do not use a magic eraser here, and never spray water or cleaner into a sensor opening. On j series and the Combo 10 Max, also wipe the front-facing camera.
Frequency: iRobot’s own guidance varies by document — monthly in the contacts article, “at least once a week” in the placement article, every two weeks for the Auto-Wash dock. Weekly is the safe read for the contacts; monthly for the sensors.
A note on cliff sensors: they’re worth keeping clean, but iRobot’s Error 18 procedure never blames them for docking failures. Dirty or dark-floor-confused cliff sensors throw their own errors (6 and 12) and stop the robot mid-run. Don’t chase them for a docking problem — and never block or disable them.
Which sensor is even doing this
On 500 through 900, e, i, s series and Braava jet m, docking uses the RCON — the Room Confinement Sensor on the bumper that sees the Home Base, Clean Base and Virtual Walls. You can test it: hold CLEAN for 3 seconds to clear old jobs, face the robot at the dock within 6 ft, press CLEAN, then press Dock.
Skip that test on j series and Combo 10 Max — they have no RCON at all and dock by front-facing camera. Cleaning a nonexistent IR receiver is wasted effort on those machines.
The mechanical causes people skip
iRobot puts wheels at step 4 of the official sequence, and it’s more productive than it sounds. Check the front caster: if its metal axle is dislodged or not seated properly, iRobot says that alone may be why Error 18 is occurring. Torn or damaged wheel treads also stop a robot from mounting the dock. Turn each side wheel by hand and feel for equal resistance.
Then the boring one: is the dock actually powered? The dock light shuts off by itself after a few seconds to save power, so darkness isn’t a fault. On an Evac dock, lift the lid and pull the bag tag partway up — the light should turn red. Re-seat the line cord at both ends and test the outlet with a lamp. If the outlet is fine and the cord is undamaged but the dock is dead, the dock needs replacing and you keep the original cord.
If it still won’t dock
Reboot the robot and the dock — briefly unplug the dock, plug it back in. Rebooting does not delete maps or schedules. Hold times vary by model: 9 seconds on j series and Combo 10 Max, 10 seconds on Wi-Fi 800/900 and Mini, 20 seconds on i series, s series and Braava jet m. Allow up to 90 seconds for it to come back.
Finally, distance. iRobot publishes coverage areas rather than a maximum docking range — 3,000 ft² for s series, 2,500 ft² for most i and j models, 2,000 ft² for the 900s, 1,600 ft² for i3–i5 — and notes that if the robot is too far out with a low battery, it simply may not have the charge to get home. A robot that keeps stranding itself in the far corner of a large house isn’t broken; it’s out of range of its own battery.
One last thing worth knowing: Wi-Fi is not required to dock. Clean, Dock and Spot Clean all work without the app. Wi-Fi at the dock matters for map sync and app-initiated commands, not for the IR and visual homing itself — so a docking failure is rarely a network problem.
Brand-new Essential owners
If a Roomba Essential has never once docked successfully, check for the thin plastic film over the IR window on the bumper and on the dock. iRobot calls this out specifically. It ships on, and it stops docking cold.
