Servi and Servi Plus: E-stop recovery and the "I'm stuck" message, per the official manuals

The E-stop (Servi Plus)

The E-stop is the red button on the back bottom of the Servi Plus body. Pressing it locks the wheels — it’s the move when someone steps into the robot’s path or the screen stops responding. Releasing it is a three-step sequence, and skipping the last step is why staff think the robot is “broken” afterward:

  1. Twist the button to the right (arrow direction) to release it.
  2. The mission that was running is canceled and the screen shows “Mission Failed.” That’s expected, not an error to chase.
  3. Press “Go to Home” and send the robot to a new destination — starting the new mission is what actually releases the wheel lock.

If the robot malfunctions with strange sounds, smells, or smoke, the manual’s instruction is E-stop plus shutdown: hold the power button (bottom right, under the charging cover) for 5 seconds.

Note the original Servi is different: its official manual documents no E-stop button — you pause it by tapping the screen or pushing either side button on the middle level, and power-cycle by holding the power button under the display.

“I’m stuck” — two different problems, one message

Blocked path. The base LED goes red/orange/yellow and the robot reports it’s stuck. Bear’s official actions: remove obstacles from the path, check for anything in front of the camera sensor (and, on the original Servi, anything hanging over the front lip of a tray or bus tub), then resume. Yes, you’re allowed to push it — the manual explicitly says to manually push the robot to reposition it.

Nothing in the way = position error. The robot has lost localization. On Servi Plus, relocate it to the location where it starts serving. The original Servi manual gives two precise recovery paths: push it to a known stop point (Expo, Dish, Charge), face it the normal direction, and long-press that tile on the home screen until the “Do you want to position at…” popup appears — or push it to about 2 ft from the nearest QR tag, facing it, and wait for “QR tag is detected. Pushing rules that protect the weight sensors

Push from the front or back of the body — never by the trays. Force on a tray (pushing, dragging, or grabbing it) can break the weight sensor, which is a service call. If you must lift (the Servi Plus is 136.7 lbs, so preferably don’t), hold below the top tray. Don’t carry it with wheels off the ground, and pause it (touch the screen) before moving it by hand. When wheels are locked, Manual Drive in the settings — or the Wheel Unlock setting — is the sanctioned way to move it.

Preventing the next stuck

The manual is candid about what the LiDAR + depth camera can’t see: objects thinner than 2 in (5 cm), small floor bumps, hanging objects like light fixtures, and mirrors or glass. Physical limits: 12 mm max bump (7 mm for comfortable driving), 7° max slope, 65 cm minimum path width, and strong direct light can disrupt perception. A stool leg, a dangling menu board, or afternoon glare through a window will produce “I’m stuck” on a route that worked all morning — fix the route, not the robot. A dead battery also loses position: push it to the charger, give it 45–60 minutes, then reposition (QR tag on original Servi) before trusting it with plates.
